Introduction

The Ophthalmic Research Center (ORC) was established in 1999 as the first Iranian research center for eye disease. It is affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences; furthermore, the ORC is a member of the National Ophthalmic Research Network in Iran under supervision of the Ministry of Health. This center is linked with the department of Ophthalmology at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and three referral hospitals for eye disease in Tehran (Labbafinejad Medical Center, Imam Hossein Medical Center, Torfeh Hospital) where many residency and fellowship programs are held each year. The ORC is joined with the Iranian Eye Bank as well.
The vision of this center is to eliminate preventable blindness and low vision in Iran and its main mission is to provide technical and financial facilities for investigators to perform high quality research and generate basic information regarding eye disease. A main domain of ORC activity is to develop research facilities for different ophthalmic aspects including :  1- clinical studies, 2-  basic studies, 3- epidemiologic studies and 4- evaluation of social and public aspects of ocular disorders. ORC has achieved the top rank in Iran for scientific material production, including articles published in the most prestigious medical journals in the field of ophthalmology.
The Ophthalmic Research Center intends to support WHO programs such as: Vision 2020, elimination of visual impairment and access to eye health for all. This could be achieved by increasing technical cooperation with local health policy makers and other relevant institutions by providing information, services, and advice, and also through supporting research and training.

Main objectives:

  • To take an active part in the development of strategies for prevention of blindness;
  • To foster a multidisciplinary approach to promotion of eye health and to deliver eye care to all;
  • To conduct applied field research on the epidemiology, management, and operational aspects of avoidable blindness;
  • To provide facilities for training personnel at different professional levels; and
  • To develop field practice models for comprehensive eye care.
