Nowadays, the importance of close communication between basic and clinical sciences is like a life inspiration for survival, development, and moving on of all fields of medical sciences. The growing future of ophthalmology, with the research-based perception, is engaged with rapid and useful translation of findings from basic sciences for clinical applications

About Laboratory:
Like all authentic scientific centers worldwide, translational ophthalmology is one of the principle goals of Ophthalmic Research Center, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. Hence, with this purpose, the cellular and molecular laboratory with growing capabilities was established in 2011 at the basement floor of Labbafinejad Medical Center, Tehran-Iran, with the genuine and compassionate contribution of medical basic scientists from authentic scientific centers such as National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization, Central Eye Bank of Iran, and Royan Institute.

Current Facilities in the Cellular and Molecular Laboratory:

  1. Cultivation of retinal cells, including retinal pigment epithelial cells (performed), retinal photoreceptors and retinal ganglion cells (under investigation)
  2. Cultivation of corneal cells, including corneal endothelial cells (performed), corneal keratocytes (performed), and corneal epithelial cells (under investigation)
  3. Immunocytochemistry and Immunohistochemistry
  4. Inverted Fluorescence Microscopy
  5. Real time PCR for genetic investigations
  6. ELISA tests
  7. Western Blot
